Niagara Community Foundation and United Way Niagara have partnered with the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre to bring Uncharitable: the Movie to The Film House on Thursday, May 28 at 7:00 p.m.

This pay-what-you-can community screening is open to the public. The film is based on the book, Uncharitable by Dan Pallotta, which became one of the most talked-about TED talks of all time.

This critical documentary, featuring actor Edward Norton, examines the true needs and potential of the charitable sector and asks pointed questions about the world of philanthropy. The movie’s website asks, “What if charity could be transformed from a gesture to an answer - to solving the world's greatest problems? What if everything we've been taught about charitable giving is wrong?”

“This is an important film for our donors, fundholders and community partners to see,” says NCF’s executive director Bryan Rose. “May is Leave a Legacy Month. As we encourage donors to reflect on their legacy, we also want to think critically about our lasting legacy here in Niagara. Empowering the charitable sector is a pillar of our work but we want to ensure that we are not only providing the resources our charity partners need but are challenging our donors to think about philanthropy in an equitable, sustainable and world-changing way.”

“This documentary reframes the way we think about charity, recognizing the power of the charitable sector to change the world,” says Chandra Hardeen, director of community investment at United Way Niagara. “It is an inspiring take that encourages us all to think bigger and bolder and commit to fostering lasting impact. As societal challenges grow in complexity, the film underscores the imperative of trusting and empowering our charitable sector partners to do what it takes.”

Sara Palmierei, director of programming and marketing at the First Ontario Performing Arts Centre, adds “We are proud to partner with our friends at Niagara Community Foundation and United Way Niagara to bring this important reflection about charitable giving to The Film House. Both organizations provide vital support for Niagara and we are grateful for their stewardship.”

There will be a panel discussion featuring some of Niagara’s charity experts and a Q & A session after the film, bringing the conversation to the local level.

Tickets can be reserved and purchased from the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre website.
