Good time for bird-watching along Niagara shores

This is an interesting time of year for bird-watching. Most of the ducks that winter in the Lower Niagara River have headed north and the warmer weather brings others through the area as they migrate from southern areas.

The turkey vultures have been a common sight, hovering over the area performing aerial acrobatics. Mergansers are pairing off after their mating rituals offshore. Kingfishers are actively flying along the waterfront, building their nests, chasing each other and diving for fish.

It was wonderful to spot a juvenile bald eagle sitting high in a tree overlooking the lake. In Four Mile Creek Pond more rare species of ducks can be seen such as blue-winged teal, black ducks and widgens, as they pass through the area.
