A man from the Niagara Region is facing charges after a collision in northern Ontario in which a driver left the scene and was later tracked down with the help of a police K9 unit.
Police say the incident took place Saturday afternoon on Highway 17 about four hours northwest of Sault Ste. Marie.
At around 12:45 p.m., members of the Marathon OPP Detachment, EMS and local fire department responded to a collision involving two vehicles about 10 km east of Marathon.
Prior to police arriving, it was reported one driver had left the scene on foot, police said in a news release.
An OPP emergency response team and canine unit found the driver, with help from Marathon OPP.
Jackson Erb, 27, of St Catharines is charged with:
- Dangerous operation of a motor vehicle
- Failure to stop after an accident
- Resisting a peace officer
- Failure to comply with a probation order
The accused was scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Marathon on May 28.
One driver was treated for minor injuries and was transported to a local area hospital and later released, police said.
None of the allegations has been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
