Replacing speed signs should eliminate confusion

The speed limit of 50 km/hr will remain on East and West Line for a stretch as vehicles approach Four Mile Creek Road, but the rest of the road will be posted at 70 km/hr.

Signs will be going up soon to mark a reduced speed on East and West Line.

At Tuesday’s committee-of-the-whole meeting, recommendations were approved to reduce the speed limit to 70 km/h on East and West Line, between Lakeshore Road and 495 meters west of Four Mile Creek Road.

During the discussion, Lord Mayor Gary Zalepa asked why this section of road is mentioned in the bylaw but in the report it says the change will result in a reduction to 70 km/h between Lakeshore Road and Niagara River Parkway.

Acting director of operations Darren MacKenzie said this speed limit adjustment was previously identified by the town but never acted on.

“There had been a miss in updating the bylaw,” he said.

Staff referred to the speed reduction in the report as a need to complete a housekeeping update of the bylaw to “address inconsistency with previous decisions and current posted speed limits.”

The report also states there is a school, church and urban 50 km/h zone from Four Mile Creek Road to a point 495 meters west of Four Mile Creek Road.

The purpose of the recommendations, staff said, is to reduce the speed limit from 80km/h to 70 km/h on East and West Line between Lakeshore Road and 495 meters west of Four Mile Creek Road, as well as between Niagara Stone Road and Niagara River Parkway.

The decision means 11 new signs with a cost of $3,300.
