New bench installed at Hospice Niagara to honour therapy dogs

The bench was donated in memory of dogs who have passed away and for those who continue to volunteer.

Their paws have love to share. Hospice Niagara is beyond grateful for all of the dogs (and their humans) who have given comfort in times of need.

Since 2018, the Therapeutic Paws of Canada, Niagara team, has volunteered at hospice, providing emotional support for people and families in the residence as well as those attending the Day Hospice program, says a Hospice Niagara news release.

On Monday, May 29, a new bench was officially installed at Hospice Niagara, thanks to the generosity of the Theraputic Paws organization. The bench, custom-made by local craftsperson Jim Alexander, is being donated in memory of therapy dogs who have passed away and those that continue to volunteer.

“Dog therapy can help to reduce stress, improve communication for those who struggle, lower blood pressure and improve an individual’s emotional state,” says Lori Thwaites, former team leader and evaluator for Niagara Region's  Therapeutic Paws.

“Our team felt they wanted to make a special contribution to hospice, acknowledging the volunteer work our dogs do. It is our hope that when people in the residence, families, staff members and hospice volunteers enjoy this custom-created bench, it will bring smiles and comfort.”

Therapeutic Paws of Canada is a registered charity offering free therapy pet visitations. More than 500 volunteers across Canada, including 30 volunteers in Niagara, dedicate their time to various programs, which include regular visits to Hospice Niagara, seniors’ facilities, hospitals in Niagara, Brock University and Ridley College, to name a few. Therapeutic Paws teams also participate in special events and fundraisers, including Hike for Hospice Niagara. This is its 21st anniversary year.
