Niagara-on-the-Lake Local received this letter on the continuing controversy over use of the former Parliament Oak school.

My family and I have been residents of Niagara-on-the -Lake for 25 years. We haven’t been here as long as some, but we love the beauty of the place just the same. My children went to Parliament Oak and if you went there you knew it was more than just a school, it was a family.

What is being proposed for this historical site is such a disgrace and there are so many other things that could be done with that beautiful part of town. We don’t need any more hotels, or homes. Why not make it into something that everyone can enjoy and promote the history of our town?

Parliament Oak has a historical significance and is a stop on the tour of the Freedom Trail and is the place where a session of Parliament was held.

Why not make this historical building into something that would be beneficial to our town? Make it into a museum that highlights the Underground Railroad on one side and the other side could be a celebration of the lives of the Indigenous peoples that also contributed to this town.

In between the museums could be artisans who reflect both cultures. At the same time the grounds be used for artisans, festivals and the food truck events we have.
