Suspect in custody in double homicide in St. Catharines

May 3 update: 

Further investigation by detectives with the Niagara Regional Police Service Homicide Unit has led to the identification of a suspect in the deaths of 62-year-old George Mummery and 59-year-old Jennifer Allen.

On Thursday May 2, 2024, at The Village Square on St. Catharines Street in Smithville, at 9:30am, 33-year-old Andrew Mummery of St. Catharines was arrested and charged with two counts of:

  • Second-Degree Murder, contrary to Section 235(1) of the Criminal Code

Mummery had a bail hearing on May 2, 2024, at the Robert S. K. Welch Courthouse in St. Catharines and was remanded into custody.

Detectives are now looking to determine his actions between April 30, 2024, and May 2, 2024.

Upon arrest he was wearing a black coat, dark green hoodie, blue jeans, and a green backpack.

He is described as a white male, 5’10”, 160lbs, with short dark hair and unshaven.

Area residents between St. Catharines and Smithville are asked to come forward if they observed the suspect, possibly travelling on foot, to assist with this timeline.  Residents are also asked to check their CCTV cameras and/or any dash camera footage as well.

Detectives are not looking for any further suspects; the suspect and the victims were all known to each other.  At this time, there is no further known risk to public safety. 

Due to the ongoing investigation, the scene is expected to be held for several days.

Original Release – May 2, 2024

On Thursday May 2, 2024, at approximately 9am, 1 District (St. Catharines/Thorold) Uniform Officers were called to a home in the area of Queenston Street and Lorne Street in the City of St. Catharines.

When they arrived, Officers located the deceased bodies of an adult male and adult female within the home.

The Homicide Unit now has carriage of the investigation, with the Forensic Services Unit currently processing the scene.

At this time there is no indication that this was a random act of violence, with one person currently in custody.
